DESCRIPTION

This class does what it says on the tin: you do scenes, and get notes from some of the best improv teachers from around the world. Each week a new teacher is brought in to put you through your paces, and give you detailed, specific, and tailored feedback on your scenework. No themes, or gimmicks: just scenes. And since everyone is taking these classes together you'll work regularly and get to know with your classmates over these four weeks.

Space is limited to 8 people to ensure everyone gets ample stage time.

TEACHER BIOS

NOV 10 - JON NGUYEN

Jonathan Nguyen (he/hm) is British / Vietnamese improviser based in Norwich, UK. Jon is a self-professed improv nerd and he believes that fun, connectivity and inclusion should always be present. He plays with Unbridled, Michelle – A Hoopla Team, Wretched Hive Comedy, The Comediasians and The Improvised Play. He has appeared at the Edinburgh Fringe and plays regularly in London.

Jon has had training with Dogface, The Nursery, Hoopla, Dummy, The Maydays, Showstoppers as well as many teachers from across the globe. Jon loves improv and tries all variations from shortform, various formats, narrative, musical and any other style offered.

NOV 17 - INVI BRENNA

Invi Brenna has been doing Improv for a decade now, and they have a funny story about how they've been gender non-conforming since the day they were born. Originally from Norway, they moved to the UK to study all things theatre nine years ago. In the half a decade since graduating, they've directed, produced and/or acted in a variety of professional shows both scripted and unscripted.

Invi gets enthusiastic about a whole lot of things: Life as an 'English as a second language' immigrant, being autistic, disability politics, communication, all things intersectional (Thank you, Kimberlé Crenshaw) and which mangoes are the best. Especially that last one. They like their Improv like they like their life: Full of genuine human connection. It's more fun that way.

NOV 24 - KATY SCHUTTE

Katy Schutte is one of the UK's original long form improvisers. She performs and teaches all over the world, is a Head Teacher for Hoopla (the UK’s biggest improv school) and Co-Founder Director of the International Improv Station. She has been one of The Maydays since 2004, is half of legendary sci-fi improv duo Project2, performs with Hell Yeah! and authored The Improviser's Way: A Longform Workbook, published by Nick Hern Books.

Katy is a writer, performer and theatre maker, currently working in live theatre and in augmented and virtual reality.

DEC 1 - IAN PARIZOT

Ian trained in improvisation under Keith Johnstone and in physical theatre at Ecole Internationale Jacques Lecoq. He is one of the co-founders of Compagnie Eux and is currently artistic director of Again! Productions where he directed the four Johnstonian formats Theatresports, Maestro Impro, Gorilla Theatre and LifeGame as well as original shows. Ian was a guest performer at international festivals in Atlanta, Chicago, Vancouver, Seattle, Hawaii and Austin.

As a teacher, Ian develops a balanced pedagogy both demanding and benevolent while catering to the needs of the class with the final objective of helping each student find autonomy and ownership in their personal artistic practice.
