DESCRIPTION
The documentary genre has radically evolved in recent years. As a broad term, 'Documentary' is used to describe a non-fiction movie that in some way "documents" or captures reality. Such shows can be funny, poignant, disturbing, absurd, inspirational, shocking or any combination! Such a genre is perfect for an improv format!
Created by Billy Merritt for the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre back in 2002, The Documentary is an improv format that builds upon the audience's suggestion of a made-up place or event. Through a fake factoid pattern game opening, 2 person and group scenes, improv teams create documentary-style stories that have never been seen before (or likely to be seen again!). If you are a fan of shows like 'Welcome to Wrexham', 'Merpeople', 'Tiger King', 'Louis Theroux's Weird Weekends', 'The Tinder Swindler', 'Cheer', 'Catwalk: Tales from the Cat Show Circuit', this is the class for you!
Every other week, starting Nov 12, you'll be performing in a show on the official Improv College YouTube channel, hosted by your teacher. Not only will you learn the format but you'll get a chance to put it on its feet four times in front of an audience!
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Perform an improvised long-form show in the style of a fictionalised documentary
- Build and expand the environment where the documentary takes place
- Create engaging talking-head scenes with your scene partner, which evolve and change with every new story beat
- Develop your communication skills as both an off-screen and on-screen narrator
- Work with your team to establish fun and unusual group scenes
If you choose the Installment payment option, your second payment will be due Nov 15, 2023.
TEACHER: FIONA HOWAT
Fiona is a London-based voice-over artist, improviser, and professional gamemaster (GM) who decided people need to try out and play more roleplaying games (RPGs). So, she decided to start up a podcast based on it 'What Am I Rolling?'! She also co-hosts 'The DM’s Book Club', a weekly podcast about reading about some Dungeons and Dragons and discussing how it might be included in RPG campaigns!
